The facility becomes the only hospital on Manhattan's Lower West Side

Northwell Health is expanding Lenox Health Greenwich Village into Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital (NGVH), a hospital designed to meet the evolving health care needs of the West Village community. This significant transformation adds nearly 16,000 square feet of hospital space — which will include an eight-bed medical/surgical inpatient unit with telemetry capability and a cardiac catheterization suite (cath lab) with electrophysiology services — representing a $32 million investment in the health and well-being of the neighborhood. The facility will be the only hospital serving Manhattan’s Lower West Side.

“At Northwell, our mission is to provide communities with the care they deserve and we’re proud to restore essential services to an area that has gone without them for far too long,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. “By building a hospital that’s rooted in clinical excellence, we’re not just filling a gap — we’re enhancing the future of health care in the West Village.”

NGVH already provides a 24/7 emergency department, imaging, ambulatory surgery, orthopedic medicine and gastroenterology services. Building on that foundation, the new hospital will offer emergency cardiac interventions and elective procedures through a state-of-the-art cath lab, bringing advanced, life-saving care directly to the neighborhood. The new inpatient suite will provide comprehensive care for low-acuity patients, primarily admitted from the emergency department, ensuring specialized treatment for a broad spectrum of conditions. Both the cath lab and inpatient unit are set to open this summer. Additional enhancements include an expanded lab and pharmacy, a warming kitchen and an upgraded electrical infrastructure.

“The opening of Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital is a milestone for the community,” said Tracy Feiertag, MS, DHA, vice president of NGVH. “Our commitment has always been to deliver patient-centered care that is both accessible and of the highest quality. We’ve listened to what our neighbors need and we’re delivering that advanced care right here in the West Village.”

With rising cases of heart disease in New York and a growing demand for treatment, NGVH is enhancing its cardiac care offerings to meet these needs. The facility will offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic and interventional procedures, including coronary angioplasty, stent placement, cardiac catheterization, catheter ablation and pacemaker/defibrillator implantation. These services are especially vital in a community with a large LGBTQ+ population, which studies show faces higher rates of cardiovascular disease and often encounters barriers to accessing care.

“We’re bringing world-class heart services to the heart of the West Village,” said Varinder P. Singh, MD, chair of cardiology at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital, SVP of cardiology for Northwell’s Western Region, and SVP and executive director of global and international health at Northwell Health. “This neighborhood has always been a hub for culture and diversity; now, it’s a hub for specialized cardiac care, too. With advanced offerings like our new cath lab and electrophysiology services, we have the expertise and resources to both prevent problems and solve them swiftly — meeting the needs of this vibrant community.”

NGVH has been nationally recognized for its excellence in health care. It is Joint Commission certified as a Primary Stroke Center and has been named an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader by the Human Rights Campaign, underscoring its commitment to inclusive and equitable care. The hospital’s emergency department has earned the Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association for exceptional performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. The department is also designated as a SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examination) Center of Excellence and is PACED (Pain and Addiction Care in the Emergency Department) accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians. Additionally, its parent company Northwell Health is New York State's most awarded health system according to U.S. News & World Report rankings, with its cardiac programs named among America's best by Healthgrades.

Founded in 2014 as Lenox Hill HealthPlex following the closure of St. Vincent's Hospital, NGVH was initially launched as Manhattan's first satellite emergency department. It was later renamed Lenox Health Greenwich Village, and over time, it expanded to include comprehensive imaging services, an ambulatory surgery suite and multispecialty physician practices. The evolution into NGVH represents the next step in Northwell’s ongoing commitment to enhance health care services in the West Village.
